The University of Toronto Engineering Kompetitons (UTEK) will be in its 9th year in 2011, and acts as a qualifier for the Ontario Engineering Competition. UTEK is hosted by the Engineering Society, although the Alumni Office offers large support for it, since UTEK is an event that not only showcases UofT’s engineering talent, it also engages past alumni to connect with students via judging.

==Competitions==
UTEK Competitors can compete in one of six categories: Junior Design, Senior Design, Consulting Engineering, Innovative Design, Engineering Communications, and Parliamentary Debate.

All six categories are held on the same day of competition, with an awards ceremony held at the end of the competition day.

===Categories===
====Senior Design====
In teams of four, students in third or fourth year compete to solve an engineering problem disclosed on the day of the event despite limited materials and preparation time. This is a condensed version of the Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) 15 hour competition, and will last 5 hours. The winning team should have a creative and feasible design, allowing them to move on to the OEC.

====Junior Design====
This category challenges first and second year students to design and construct a project which is revealed on the day of the competition. Similar to the Senior Team Design, both time and materials are limited. They are judged based on originality, creativity, teamwork and presentation. The time for this kompetition category is four hours.

====Innovative Design====
This category encourages aspiring engineers to experience bringing a new product or service to the market. Teams will produce an original design for a process, service or a product they have invented. Winning entries will have combined originality , technical and economical feasibility, a solid marketing plan with a high quality presentation and exhibition.

====Consulting Engineering====
In teams of up to four, kompetitors will construct and a promote a solution to an engineering problem which could be given on the date of the kompetition. In this category, sufficient preparation, teamwork, resourcefulness and communication skills are the key to taking home the winning prize.

====Engineering Communications====
The Engineering Communication category challenges competitors in teams of one or two to present a well supported viewpoint on the social, econimic and environmental impact of any current technological issue. In this kompetition, participants must identify a technological issue, form an opinion and present a convincing well-supported argument. Winning entries will have a through understanding of the issue at hand, a convincing viewpoint and a dynamic presentation.

===Judging===
The UTEK Judging Panels usually consist of Alumni in the industry and Professors from various departments in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.

==Major Milestones for EngSoc in 2010-2011==
===EngSoc's Structure===
At a General Meeting on January 25, 2011, a vastly revamped structure for the Society's governance was approved. Under the former structure, the Society's Board of Directors for the purposes of the Ontario Corporations Act was a body known as the Engineering Society Council, consisting of all Officers, Internal Directors, Ex-Officio Directors and Class Representatives. The changes approved at the January 25 meeting created a new Board of Directors entirely separate from Council, with each of the new Board's members to be directly elected by engineering students. This resulted in a reduction in size of the Board from Council's 100+ members to the new Board's 23 members. Following changes approved at the Council meeting of January 31, 2011, Internal Directors are to be known as Project Directors to distinguish them from members of the Board of Directors.

The VP Communications is responsible for communication matters within the society – this includes sending out mass-mail, and overseeing both the website and the society’s five official publications (Toike Oike, Cannon, F!rosh Handbook, Skule Planner and Skulebook). The VP Communications also maintains documentation essential to the Engineering Society, such as its constitution and meeting minutes. In addition, The VP Communications also organizes the monthly council meetings, as well as the annual general meeting. Last, and certainly not least, the VP Communications is a member of the Executive, and as such participates with the President and the other VPs in fashioning and implementing Engineering Society initiatives.The VP Communications’ portfolio of directors are all linked to the Society’s communication media. The [[President]] is responsible for the smooth operation of the society. This can include a wide range of work including: representing the society to different groups on campus; drafting and negotiation of contracts; dealing with legal issues; and of course, working with the officers and directors of the society.

The President represents the society, the officers, and the directors in many different forums with the faculty, the alumni, UTSU, industry, and much more. There are a number of committees and boards that the President participates in, but this may change from year to year. This includes the Engineering Alumni Council, Engineering Society Council, Faculty Executive Committee, Student-Faculty Committee, Ombuds Committeee, St. George Round Table, UTSU Board of Directors (non-voting member), and is an Ex-Officio member of any engineering society standing committees.

The President’s portfolio is comprised of the officer’s of the society, the business manager, and most of the ex-officio directors. This includes:

Ultimate F!rosh

The [[Ultimate F!rosh]] competition takes place on the Tuesday evening of [[Godiva Week]]. Unlike many other [[Godiva Week]] competitions, such as [[Mr. Blue & Gold]] or [[Godiva's Crown]], where F!rosh are forbidden from winning, Ultimate F!rosh can only be won by a first year student. The competition consists of a series of challenges determined by the previous year's Ultimate F!rosh and the runner-up from the year before.

Upon winning, the victorious F!rosh is rewarded a hardhat and swears an oath to jump up and down on command for until the next Ultimate F!rosh is chosen one year later.
