The Blue & Gold Committee is the Skule&trade; spirit committee in charge of many Skule&trade; activities and events, including Godiva Week, bus trips, movie nights, and Homecoming.

Typically, the Blue & Gold Committee runs one movie night on the first night of F!rosh Week, to welcome incoming first year students to Skule™. As well, the Blue & Gold Committee usually runs a few other movie nights throughout the course of the Skule&trade; year, including one during Godiva Week.

The Blue & Gold Committee plans the construction of the Skule&trade; entry in the Homecoming float competition, judged by the ex-Blue & Gold Committee chairs. Past entries have included a streetcar, a Viking ship, and a boombox.

As well, they organize Godiva Week, including events such as Ye Grande Olde Chariot Race, the Mr. Blue & Gold and Godiva's Crown competitions, the Village Pub Crawl, and various charity events.

In recent years, the Blue & Gold Committee has also organized a Tools 101 event for F!rosh, to teach them how to safely use basic power tools.

The Cannon is the official magazine of the University of Toronto Engineering Society. Established in 1978 as a serious newspaper, it serves the undergraduate students of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. The Cannon became a magazine in 2022, with a circulation of up to 1500 across the University of Toronto campus. It is one of two publications funded by the Engineering Society (the other being the Toike Oike).
History
(still a work-in-progress)
1977
The Engineering Society identified the need to expose the Faculty's professional and technical achievements to the engineering community. They resolved to introduce a more serious newspaper to contrast the more humorous newspaper, the Toike Oike.

1978: First Issue
The first issue of The Cannon is published in September. The newspaper was published every week that the Toike Oike was not.

1979-80
The publication schedule became monthly, as weekly publications were too demanding for staff.
1980-81
The Cannon was mailed to every student engineering society in Canada, to Ontario high schools, and to several alumni. Regular content included Society news and technical articles.
2011-2013
1T1-1T2 and 1T2-1T3 were noted as bad years for The Cannon newspaper, where publications were intermittent or lacking.

Yerusha Nuh, VP Communications 1T2-1T3, writes about the trouble in the January 2013 printed issue, with the announcement of establishing an online Cannon as its front page.
Troubles mentioned included lack of commitment from staff members to dedicate to a regular publishing schedule, possible dying readership of printed issues as changing times called more for easier online access and social media integration, and the disappearance of 1T2-1T3 Editor-in-Chief (EIC) Vijay Unnithan from his responsibilities.
2013-2014
The Cannon (led by Co-Editors Ashkan Parcham-Kashani and Luke Household) ran their cannon.skule.ca website for a full school year as the online source of news around Skule, but also published 3 printed issues for distribution (F!rosh/September, January, and Post-EngSoc Elections/April)
2022-2023
The Cannon transitioned to a magazine format in October 2022. The magazine was generally well-received by the community.

2023-2024
The Cannon scaled its publish rate down to three issues a year to reflect the longer publishing cycle of a magazine.

Cannonball is one of the annual semi-formals held by the Engineering Society. It is traditionally held during the winter term at the conclusion of Godiva Week. It is a celebration of Skule™ spirit, and is named after the mascot of Skule, the mighty Skule™ Cannon.

The Lady Godiva Memorial Bnad and the Skule Cannon both make appearances at Cannonball. The LGMB, in particular, uses Cannonball to celebrate the selection of its new Baby Bnad Leedur and D(r)umb Miner.

In addition, Mr. Blue & Gold and Godiva's Crown, whom are both selected during Godiva Week, share the ceremonial first dance at Cannonball to celebrate their new titles.
History
"It was at [the] Ajax [campus], where social affairs were such a centrepiece, that students held the first Engineers' Ball, an event that, renamed the Cannon Ball in 1955, turned into an enduring annual tradition."

Cannonball (back then "Cannon Ball") used to be referred to as the "Ball of the Fall", since it was held during the fall term, generally at Hart House. It had existed for some time in addition to the Skule/School At-Home, which was historically the primary dinner dance for the school year, held during the winter term (oftentimes at the Royal York Hotel). By the mid-1970s, however, the At-Home disappeared and Cannonball was moved to the winter term, becoming *the* focal dinner dance of the school year.
Past Cannonball Venues
Prior to 2004, Cannonball was run by the Social Chair.

Skule™ Kup (often referred to in conversation as "SKup") is a committee based on the principles of providing fun competition between students from the nine different disciplines (and Track One). Since its inception in 2011, Skule Kup has been committed to organizing various events to help engineering students take a break from their everyday lives. Through friendly competition, the committee aims to create a dynamic social environment where students get to meet others from their own discipline and from competing disciplines alike. Thus far, Skule Kup has organized unconventional and unique events to attract students with differing interests and personalities, and also, to have students experience something new.

As of recent years, Skule Kup has been known for their annual Capture the Flag game against Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) engineering students, their Halloween pumpkin carving event, and Discipline Feud, a version of Family Feud where other Skule students were surveyed and the two Skule Kup disciplines with the most points at the end of the year can compete to win all the glory.

Some other events held in the past:
Ninja,
Picture This,
Penny Wars,
Kup Kaos,
Skoosball,
The Sandford Fleming Building, located on 10 King's College Road, was built in 1907 (originally for the physics department) and designed by architects Darling & Pearson. It is named after Sir Sandford Fleming, the chief engineer of the Intercolonial Railway of Canada, the chief engineer on Canadian Pacific Railways surveys, and is famous for helping to establish a standardized twenty-four-hour system of international time zones.

The building is the hub of engineering student activity as the home of the Engineering Society office, Engineering Stores, the Lady Godiva Memorial Bnad room, the Hard Hat Cafe, the Engineering and Computer Science Library, and "The Pit", a central student common space for events and gatherings.

In 1977, the building was largely destroyed by a massive fire, leaving only the exterior structure intact. The interior was reconstructed based on the original design by Page and Steele architects.

Structure and Architecture
The Sandford Fleming Building is designed in the neoclassical Beaux-Arts style, typical of many early twentieth-century buildings particularly in North America. The original design had the building as a U-shape (with the open portion of the "U" facing west as a courtyard fully open to the street before the adjoining Galbraith Building was constructed in that space). Following the Fire of 1977, the western portion of the building was filled in to create a student commons area (now known as "The Pit" or the "SF Atrium").

The most distinctive feature from the exterior is the eastern facade, with its semi-circular protrusion (now hosting the classroom SF1105 and in its upper portion, a part of the Engineering and Computer Science Library). Originally, both floors were part of a large lecture hall and the three grand doors at the exterior were used for access.

History
The Sandford Fleming Building was originally known as the physics building, housing most of the Department of Physics until the construction of Physical Laboratories in 1967. The physics department was itself sharing facilities at University College in what is now the Croft Chapter House and several rooms in the cloisters, but the space was insufficient for the department by the turn of the century. To fund a new building, in early 1904, the University of Toronto Alumni Association lobbied Ontario Premier, George William Ross, for funding. A meeting was held in March 1904 and backed by a student petition with 1,400 signatures. In the midst of the 1904 Ontario election campaign, Ross' Liberal government announced $180,000 to pay for the new physics building.

The physics building was designed by Darling & Pearson architects, and built as part of a cluster of construction that took place from 1905 to 1908, including the construction of Convocation Hall in 1906 and the dismantling of the observatory (now the UTSU Building) in 1908 to permit the northern extension of King's College Road. Completion of the building was costlier than anticipated.

The building formally opened on September 27, 1907, the day after the inauguration of new University of Toronto President, Robert Falconer. The opening was attended by university dignitaries and included a lecture by John McLennan, head of the physics department, on how the building would be used.

Although the physics department shared some personnel and equipment in the early days of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, the two were separately managed and engineering students only had limited classes with physics professors. Engineering did not generally make use of space in the physics building until the 1960s. In 1960, the Galbraith Building was built on the west side of the old physics building, with an adjoining wall and interconnected hallways. By the mid-1960s, the physics department had moved out to the newly constructed McLennan Physical Laboratories, leaving the building, now renamed the Sandford Fleming Building, to the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the same time that the old School of Practical Science building was being torn down.

It is difficult to imagine the Sandford Fleming building, the heart of engineering student life at the University of Toronto, engulfed in flames. That is the sight that students and faculty members were faced with in the early morning of February 11, 1977. The fire, which began in the east corner lecture room (approximately where room SF1101 presently stands), spread for eight hours before being contained, destroying virtually everything but the building’s shell.

One individual who formerly worked in the Sandford Fleming Building during this time period recounted the story as follows:

<blockquote>
They were never certain about how the fire started. The two theories were "electrical wiring fault", and "homeless guy smoking in the building". Both are plausible, since the wiring still had remnants from when the building was built (1920s?), and since it was open 24/7, there were sometimes crusty old guys who would hole up in in the (unfinished and mostly empty) basement. Once in a while you'd see the campus cops kicking some guy out, but mostly they weren't bothered if they didn't make trouble.

They do know where it started - in the square section on the north-east corner (see the very first picture), which was a lecture room with steeply tiered seats, and lots of paper and who knows what gunk piled up under them over the years. It went up from there, and then across in the attic (destroying the lifetime archives of one Prof. Jones, along with the Eng Sci chariot (from the chariot races), and over to above that semi-circular lecture hall. The building had what they call mill flooring, i.e. heavy timbers without gaps, which is very hard to set alight, but once flames got up towards the attic, there was more exposed thinner wood, and burning stuff started to crash down to the lower floors. It's remarkable that my office had smoke and water damage, but no flames or real heat ever got in, even though the fire moved directly over it to get to the big lecture hall. In that first picture you can see all the windows but mine lit up by the flames.

It was weird, because I and various people left fairly late the night before, and then at 4am I got a call from a colleague who for some reason woke up in the night, couldn't get back to sleep, turned on the radio, and heard about this major fire at UofT. By the time I got down there on the Yonge night bus it was pretty much out, and people who had been there at the time had moved critical backup tapes and such out of the building. We spent the next week in exile, partly running computer stuff at an IBM site in Don Mills, and then in the Engineering Annex building across the lane from Sandford Fleming. They rebuilt SF in phases over the next several years. I still have some books that were in my office that have a faint smoky smell.
</blockquote>

Nobody was injured in the blaze, but almost 50,000 square feet of classrooms, laboratories, and faculty and graduate offices were lost. Emergency crews were able to save much of the computer centre in the South wing and brought most of the library books to safety, but several documents were unrecoverable. The Faculty suffered a significant loss of valuable research and archives. Among the losses were faculty and graduate research, as well as the Faculty Historical Collection.

The Aftermath
In the midst of ongoing relief efforts, classes continued for students in order to avoid a disruption to schedules,
but were diverted to other buildings immediately. The following week was the Faculty of Arts & Science’s Reading Week, so classes were relocated to their nearby buildings. The University was later able to obtain a four-year lease of the Toronto Reference Library (the building that is now the Koffler Centre on St. George Street) to hold classes while the Sandford Fleming building was rebuilt.

Reconstruction
Following the fire, the Sandford Fleming building underwent a major reconstruction from February 1977 to June 1982, rebuilding on the same foundations and walls of the original site (the original structure was largely intact although the interior was destroyed).

The renovated Sandford Fleming building opened in June 1982. Several improvements were made including new facilities for the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Departments, a new structures laboratory for Civil Engineering, and a much improved Faculty Library.

In the end, the building received a much-needed revitalization of its facilities. Originally built in 1907 and known as the Physics Building until 1967 when Engineering took occupancy, it was an outdated building in desperate need of a facelift. It is for this reason that Dean Etkin saw the benefit of a new facility and optimistically regarded the incident as a “blessing in disguise.”

June 2012 marked the thirtieth anniversary of its reopening. Thirty years after its reopening, the Sandford Fleming building is the hub of engineering student life. Its basement is home to the “atrium”, where you can find engineering students working, eating, lining up to buy school supplies, or socializing. It is also the centre for most events during F!rosh Week and Godiva Week, as well as the construction site of many mysterious and unexpected pranks. Several student-run operations including Suds, the Lady Godiva Memorial Bnad, the Hard Hat Café, Engineering Stores, and the Engineering Society can also be found here. Located on the second floor is the Engineering Library, and some of the Faculty’s largest computer labs are located on the first floor. These spaces are constantly buzzing with students throughout the school year.

Despite the devastation that struck our Faculty over thirty years ago, the new building that emerged boasted several improvements. The Sandford Fleming building has evolved into the centre of engineering student life, and will continue to foster engineering culture into the future.
The Wreck of Sir Sandford Fleming
An original poem, unattributed author, published in the Book of Skule 8T0

The legend lives on from King’s College on down, <br />
Of the briquette they call Sandford Fleming.<br />
The place, it is said, became one of the dead,<br />
When Room 126 was a’flaming.<br />
With computers in store, several thousand times more<br />
Students’ names and their marks could be kept there.<br />
The maintenance crew was a bone to be chewed,<br />
For not once had a janitor swept there.<br />

The place was a sty, and the home of Eng Sci,<br />
Which somehow avoided fire checks.<br />
As old buildings go, it was older than most,<br />
It was older than even the Annex.<br />
In spite of cold spells, it was hotter than Hell,<br />
Though the temperature soon would get higher.<br />
And later that night, when the fire bells rang out,<br />
Could it be that the place was on fire?<br />

The smoke and the flames made a tattletale sign,<br />
As the cruel wind gave fuel to the tinder.<br />
And everyone knew that an Update was due,<br />
And Sir Sandford would soon be a cinder.<br />
But the warnings came late, and this sealed the fate<br />
Of the biggest of all Eng Sci smokers.<br />
The firemen they came and they preyed for some rain,<br />
They thought it the work of some jokers...<br />

When two o’clock came, many men were on hand,<br />
In an effort to save all the tape reels.<br />
By 3:30 A.M. the whole roof had caved in,<br />
And eight men were hurt in the ordeal.<br />
Then Galbraith wired in, she had water coming in<br />
And the basement was practically swimming,<br />
And later that day, all anybody would say,<br />
‘See the wreck of the Sir Sandford Fleming?’<br />

Does anyone know where the love of God goes,<br />
When the flames turn the these to powder?<br />
The fireman say it would still have decayed<br />
In five years if the flames hadn’t got her.<br />
Well, it might have decayed if it hand’t burned down,<br />
But it surely did take on some water.<br />
And all that remained was the sign with the name,<br />
And even that was starting to totter.<br />

The damages rise, while Sir Sandford dies,<br />
And the EUT goes underwater.<br />
Oh, estimates soar, ten million and more,<br />
The 370 just missed being solder.<br />
But classes did go, as the engineers know,<br />
As if the blaze never had started.<br />
And the people did stare at the shell standing there,<br />
Remains of an era departed.<br />

In old Simcoe Hall, in the Council they said,<br />
‘We’ll just start to rebuild another.<br />
If something remains, an it can be reclaimed,<br />
It will carry the name of its father.’<br />
The legend lives on form King’s College on down,<br />
Of the briquette they called Sandofrd Fleming.<br />
The place, it was said, became one of the dead<br />
When Room 126 was a ‘flaming.
The Atrium Renovation Projects
The Sandford Fleming Atrium, or "The Pit", as it is affectionately known, has been the hub of Skule&trade; life for as long as the building has existed. Over the years, it has been subject to criticisms due to the design and size of the space, particularly as the student population began to outgrow the original specifications.

Many proposals have been made regarding the upgrade and renovation of The Pit. Around 2006, an official "Atrium Renovation Project" was founded by students and alumni, with the student organization leading the fundraising efforts through alumni donations and a student levy. An extensive re-design was proposed with the assistance of architects retained by the Engineering Society, which was to include notable features such as a staircase to the first floor, booth-style seating, fibre-optic lighting, and a green wall. However, work on this project soon stalled as the projected costs ballooned. The students and alumni were unable or unwilling to raise the required funds, and the project was abandoned by 2009.

In 2010, a less ambitious but fully funded project was completed over the summer term, which involved mainly the replacement and re-arrangement of seating and tables, the ceiling tiles and lighting, and concurrent renovations to the cafe area to accommodate new tenants. This revitalization served the student community well for years afterwards.

Eventually, post-COVID-19 pandemic, another renovation of The Pit was tabled by faculty, ostensibly to ensure its accessibility by adding a ramp into the pit itself. However, there was support among some members of the faculty to remove The Pit from the atrium entirely in this round of renovations. Thanks to campaigning by students and alumni, including then-EngSoc president Parker Johnston, a proposal retaining the lowered section of the atrium was chosen, and The Pit was saved. Construction began in August of 2025, resulting in The Pit being closed during the 2025-26 school year. This project will involve once again replacing and re-arranging seating, tables, flooring, lighting and more alongside the ramp installation.
F!rosh Week (Orientation Week) is a week-long series of events organized by the University of Toronto Engineering Society's orientation committee to welcome first year students entering the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. It includes numerous activities designed to bring students together in a fun environment and learn about the campus and classes prior to the official start of the academic year. It generally takes place in the first full week of September (NOTE: as of F!rosh 2T4, this has been changed to the last week of August) each year and is highlighted by activities such as the Downtown Walkaround, Charity Buskerfest, and Bed Races.

The planning for F!rosh Week is overseen by the Orientation Chair project director. The orientation chair is often assisted by six Vice-Chairs, responsible for overseeing each of their respective portfolios: leadership, marketing, community, operations, logistics, and finance. The Orientation Chair and their appointed Vice-Chairs make up the F!rosh Week Exec Team.
History
Since time immemorial, students have always sought a way to make new students "official" members of Skule&trade;. It was in that spirit that the original F!rosh Weeks were carried out. Mostly the responsibility of the second years, those events typically involved a simple afternoon of hazing, followed by a large F!rosh-Soph banquet to show that there were no hard feelings. These orientations tended to involve whatever physical abuses or humiliations the second years could think of, but this was all quite acceptable at the time. In those days, there was a strong sense of camaraderie among the engineers that diminished significantly during the '60's and '70's, but is now again on the rise. In fact, Dean C.H. Mitchell, who became dean in 1919, insisted that he too was a "freshman" and decided to endure the same initiation as the other F!rosh.

The 1919-1920 F!rosh year, however, consisted of a large number of returning veterans from World War I, and staged a revolt known as The Great F!rosh Uprising of 1919.

By the 1920's, orientations had become a bit more structured. The following "Rules for Freshmen" were published annually in that venerable paper the Toike Oike from the '20's through the '40's:

<blockquote>
"The first group of Rules will be enforced during the whole of the School (sic) year."

#The first year will supply all fatigue parties required by the Engineering Society Executive. These parties will be detailed by the first year Executive.
#The first year will provide one man daily, to report to the President of the Engineering Society, for whatever services may be required.
#The east door of the Engineering Building shall not be used by any Freshmen.
#Freshmen must not wear Spats or Derbies.

"The following Rules must be observed up to the time of the School initiation."

#All Freshmen will wear a green tie of the style approved and supplied by the Supply Department of the Engineering Society.
#All Freshmen will enter the school building by the basement doors only.
#Freshmen will remove their hats in all school buildings"
</blockquote>

The "green ties" mentioned were a big part of early orientations, enduring up until the 1950's. All F!rosh would be issued one, to be worn for the duration of the week, not unlike modern yellow hardhats. Also like modern F!rosh hardhats, jealous members of other faculties and colleges would persistently try to steal them. Indeed, the early initiations were often referred to as "tie-cutting season" for that reason. Other students would attempt to cut a F!rosh's tie off from just below the knot, and bags of these so-called "tie scalps" were prized by all. If a F!rosh were particularly unlucky, he might find himself disrobed, painted and have his clothes hung in a tree by hordes of overzealous students from other colleges.

By the 1930's, orientations were starting to get out of hand. In 1932, a scrap in the Skulehouse (the original engineering building, demolished in 1966 to make way for the Med building) ended with what the Varsity described as "rather severe handling of the Dean (C. H. Mitchell)". In response, the Dean banned initiations in favour of a "modernized reception" for the F!rosh. He was only partly successful, though. Green ties, Freshmen dances and toned-down initiations remained right through to the '50's. In addition, a new part of orientation appeared: engineering caps. These striped caps were worn for many years in addition to the green ties. Then in 1954, things took a turn for the worse. Campus tours had always been a big part of orientation, and on such a tour that year, Trinity, Vic and UC were looted by the F!rosh. Apart from property damage, the UC registrar was injured in the fray. The University responded by suspending the Engineering Society's constitution and giving the Engineering Faculty Council the sole power to reinstate it. But just when things were looking bleak, Hurricane Hazel hit Toronto, leaving massive damage. The engineers responded in massive numbers, donating both money and manpower to the cleanup effort. In all, over 1100 engineers turned out to help, versus a paltry 200 from the rest of the university. The faculty council reinstated the EngSoc constitution and from that point, orientation began to take on a more constructive format. It is from here that modern f!rosh week charity events evolved. After the looting, green ties and engineering caps were officially banned, but in their place, hardhats came into use.

During the 1970's and 1980's, many of the F!rosh Week events we now know and love, such as the Havenger Scunt were born. The Oath of Initiation was drafted (by John Klen né Samochin and Steve Roberts) for the first day of orientation in 1983:<blockquote>"I, an alumnus of the future

Being of… mind and body

Do hereby swear on my hand held calculator;

To maintain the traditions

Of integrity, humility, camaraderie

And good personal hygiene

As exemplified by my fellow engineers;

To learn the chorus and at least two versus

(To three decimal points)

Of Godiva, the engineer’s Hymn

And to sing it vigorously

And in the right key

At every opportunity;

To remember there is a fine line

Between having a good time and going to jail

And that not many people have a good time in jail;

To respect and protect my hard har,

The Engineering Flag,

And, above all, the Mighty Skule Cannon

For they are the symbols of Skule Spirit

Which light out way

And help us find our car keys in the dark;

And to continue to honour these obligations

After I have passed through these hallowed halls

And graduated from this,

The School of Practical Science."</blockquote>Unfortunately, an increasing sense of political correctness saw a significant decline in the more humiliating aspects of initiation that carried on into the 1980's, culminating in what is now F!rosh Week.

History adapted from Adam Trumpour, Archivist 0T2 - 0T3 and originally published in the Cannon; Volume XX, Issue I

The Great F!rosh Uprising of 1919
As all students are aware, F!rosh Week tends to involve imposing certain indignities on the incoming f!rosh (all in good fun, of course!). Well, this was even truer in the ancient past than it is today, but nevertheless, F!rosh Leedurs seldom had much difficulty keeping the new f!rosh in line. But all this was to change dramatically when the Class of 2T3 came along.

For those who know their history, this class began their Skule careers in the 1919-1920 skule year, immediately after the First World War. Not surprisingly, this class was composed overwhelmingly of former army, navy and air force servicemen. The First Year President himself had been a front-line infantry officer, and he decided that this time, the f!rosh would reverse things and initiate the leedurs. When his class was asked to present themselves at the old gymnasium behind North House to be initiated, the rebellion began. Being the experienced officer he was, he quickly assembled a corps of followers and organized them along military lines.

His Intelligence Section managed to ascertain the plan of the f!rosh leedurs, reporting to their commander that they would be gathering in the gymnasium to set things up for the initiation. The f!rosh were then to be admitted into the room at a controlled rate where they would be initiated. Keen tactician that he was, the f!rosh president-turned-Commander decided that the best course of action would be to trap the leedurs in the gym and instead control their exit, administering their own initiation as they came. Accordingly, one f!rosh Division was to lock all doors from the outside, except for one three-by-three foot door at ground level which would be used as the control exit. Another was to cut off all lights to the building, while a third would inject just enough ammonia into the gym to make the leedurs willing to escape as fast as possible.

The day of the initiations came, and as expected, the leedurs gathered in the gym. When the f!rosh failed to show up, there was some concern, but nobody took it very seriously. That is, until all the lights died. Then there was a loud crash as a skylight was shattered and a glass container of liquid ammonia plummeted to the floor. As the stifling, noxious vapours filled the room, the leedurs began to panic and made a rush for the doors, only to find all but one of them locked. Outside, the f!rosh were undoubtedly feeling quite pleased with themselves, but this was short-lived. As the first leedurs began to exit from the small control door, they seemed to be gasping for air and collapsing to the ground a good deal more than was intended. This, combined with the loud screams of agony from within the gym, led the f!rosh to believe that all was not well. The large doors were opened and there followed a mass exodus of the leedurs, many of whom fell to the grass. But fortunately, within minutes most had recovered. The f!rosh that remained on the scene were then subjected to an unplanned, uncommonly rough initiation by the leedurs. Among them was the leader of the insurrection.

Oddly enough, no f!rosh classes have ever attempted such a large-scale revolt since that time. Still, I figured it was probably best to tell this story after F!rosh Week. We wouldn't want people getting any ideas now, would we?
